Over the past few years, I've been doing a sort of "managerial role" in the life of my significant other. You see, when we started dating pretty early on, I realized that she had a talent for crafting a few accessories for girls on the beach; simple earrings, classy bracelets, and the like. She doesn't use any expensive materials for these jewelry, which makes it perfect for the beach.
Fairs and festivals occur very often here in Florida, so I talked to her about an idea one day. What if we turn her hobby into a small business? Instead of distributing her crafts to a few choice friends, why don't we sell them for cost? Her crafts were very beautiful, and I believed that convincing others that they were wouldn't be too difficult.
It was normal for her to be skeptical about the idea at first; the cost for making the trinkets were cheap, so to make a decent profit without overpricing, we had to make a lot of them on stock. It was ultimately surmountable; all that was needed was a good, steady supply and enough advertising. Still, this wasn't something we bet our lives on, so we kept our day jobs.
Over the next few months, we built up our stock one by one. I learned how to make some of the jewelry from the raw materials from time to time (under her watchful eye of course), although I spent most of my time researching on how to get the ideal spot on festivals. I began to talk to organizers, canvassing rates and the benefits that came with them.
Eventually, we decided to try it a few times. We were clearly doing something wrong, as we didn't get too much income. There was money gained, but it probably isn't enough to make the effort worthwhile. So at this point, I asked her if she liked to continue what we were doing. She replied favorably, and mentioned her love for the craft, as well as the fun of doing it with me for reasons. Hearing that, I decided to find a way to increase our revenue.
