Microsoft popularized this interview question, and others like it, in their legendary “best of the best” selection process. It may show thinking in an unfamiliar situation, and give some insight into self image, but because it's become well known it probably isn't of much use anymore. Interviewers still ask it, so be ready. With a little thought it's fairly easy to give a positive answer.

What you shouldn't do is select relatively unknown characters, even if they strongly make your point. This isn't an opportunity to show depth of pop culture knowledge. If you have to explain a character, it's the wrong character.

See both sides:
“I'm a lot like that half black, half white guy played by the actor who played the riddler on Batman. But while he only saw one side of an issue, I have a great ability to see both sides of the issue.”

Congratulations, with that answer you've done nothing but confuse the interviewer.

It's important to pick a well known character. Depending on the job, select one whose qualities reinforce your qualifications or desirable characteristics.

• Captain Kirk, Captain Picard, Captain Sisko, Captain Janeway – leadership
• Luke Skywalker – bravery
• Han Solo – risk taker
• Darth Vader – commanding presence
• Spock – logic, problem solving

Every popular character has more than one characteristic. For example while both Kirk and Picard show leadership, Kirk's is more straightforward action, while Picard's is more thoughtful, relying on others' expertise. Darth Vader includes menace, so be prepared for a little extra explanation if you choose him.

“Captain Kirk, I'm quick at coming up with a plan of action, and people trust my leadership.”

“Captain Picard, I surround myself with excellent people, and I listen to their opinions. But when a decision is needed, I make it.”

“Darth Vader, no, not the choking people part, but like Vader sometimes people take me for something else, then I prove my worth in the end.”

Interviewers change the question according to what's popular. It may be a character from Lost, or even someone from American Idol. While knowing pop culture shows keeping up with the times, don't be afraid to admit if you don't watch the show or movies.

“Between work and my family, I really don't watch television. I most see myself as mom – my kids like that.”

Avoid answers like this one. “I'm the Emperor, if you cross me, watch out!”
