It is middle of May now. That means the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination and Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination will come to the end soon. However, what students and other can get from attaining these public exams?
Students may learn how to duel with exam. They may learn how to do revision efficiently. They may earn offers for secondary six or university. And, for sure, they earn an impressive experience.
People always complain about the educational system in Hong Kong. One of the reasons is that they do not want a examination-orientated system. Nowadays, academic result affects which secondary school or university we can enter. What students should is getting the highest grade in public exams.
Besides, in recent years, the educational system shift to a more interactive way which require students to do many group projects, study outside classroom, presentation, etc. No matter students pay how many efforts on these activities, academic result is still the main course of our educational system.
We can see that, actually, there is a contradiction. On one hard, people want the next generation become an all-rounder. On the other hand, people, including employers and university interviewers, usually only focus on the examination result of students.
Nowadays, public examination result may not be objective enough to distinguish good and bad students. Many employers complain that university graduates do very poor job after they are employed. Are they responsible? Are they good at communicate with others? All these qualities cannot be seen in a score sheet.
At the very beginning, people study because they want to know more. They want to have better knowledge and quipped themselves well. But, nowadays, students only target at good mark in exam. How can students study happily and meet the goal of education under this situation?
Thus, what can we do to improve the Hong Kong educational system? The first action is changing people・s mind. People should not demand high-mark scorers in exam only. What our society need is an all-rounder but not the one who only good at one aspect.
