Most of us are unprepared for the extensive damage that a fire can cause to our house and our lives.   The damage created can turn our lives around suddenly and devastate our state of mind.  Thus, recovering from it is not always easy.  Repairing the losses can be the last thing on your mind; and the hardest part is often where to begin.  A house covered in soot, ashes, and smoke gives a great deal of headache; and starting on the path to recovery is often hectic and confusing. However, here are some tips you might find helpful if your house has been the victim of fire.
What you should do
•    Always check with the fire department first to make sure your residence is safe to enter.   Do this right away, and do not enter if advised against it.
•    If you need temporary housing, food, and other necessities you must contact your local disaster relief service.
•    If your house is insured, constant your insurance company.  They will provide detailed instructions on some immediate steps to take to protect your property, such as conducting inventory and contacting a  fire restoration company. In the event you are not insured, you can contact private organizations such as local churches, the Red Cross, and non-profit groups for aid and assistance
•    Let the fire department see if the utilities are safe to use or not. They will disconnect the unsafe ones before they leave the site. It is strongly advised that you not try to do a utility reconnection on your own.
•    You must conduct an inventory of damaged property and items. If there are any damaged goods, don’t throw them away. Let the insurance adjuster inspect the damage first.
•    Make it a priority to locate valuable documents or records and safeguard them.
•    If applicable, notify your mortgage company of the fire.  Ask for the Loss Draft Department and have them forward any paperwork that you are required to fill out.
•    You must contact the local police department and let them know your house is unoccupied. Also, contact your fire restoration company for emergency board-up service.
•    Don’t throw away the receipts that you spend on items or services related to the fire loss. Your insurance company might need the receipts later to verify losses claimed on income tax.
Following these tips will help you get started on the road to recovery.  Although the full fire damage resolution might not happen quickly, your life will gradually return to normal.
