Research shows that 67% of British motorists think the cost of running a car is an important factor when buying a vehicle.

According to a recent survey by global information services company Experian, despite two thirds of motorist being concerned about running costs, only 25% would look for a car that offered better fuel economy as their next purchase. The cost of car insurance is also something that should be taken into account.

While the car market is offering drivers more smaller economical cars, which often bring car insurance costs down, just 18% of British car owners said that they would consider a vehicle with a smaller engine and only 16% would look for a smaller car altogether.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's Automotive division, said: "There is still a reluctance to downgrade. Most drivers feel they are already driving cars they can afford to run, so their preference would be to buy a similar type of car. Some are still even planning to upgrade."

The research also found that 18% of men are more likely to downgrade in engine and car size, compared with 15% of women. Meanwhile, 17% of women said they would go for a bigger car in their next purchase.
