Motorbiking has inspired a variety of different sports, including the infamous off-road long distance race called "enduro." Off-road courses include many obstacles and challenges in stages raced in time trials against the clock.
The main type of enduro event uses time trials in stages as does the World Enduro Championship. Enduro is a broad term that applies to any kind of off-road motorbike race that takes place over long distances. A technical definition depends entirely on the set of rules governing a particular race. Different sets of rules specify routes and locations with scoring penalties for those who arrive late or early to set destinations, so it is important for drivers to stick to their routes. During enduro time trial events, riders leave together in groups of about four that are often called "rows" and each row begins on a specific minute, after checking all the riders bike, gear and off-road insurance is in tack.
For example, the event could begin at 06:00 but a rider assigned to Row 20 will arrive at their checkpoint, a non-disclosed location, at 06:20, corresponding with their row. There are different types of checkpoints as well: known checks, secret checks, emergency checks, start checks and finish checks. Emergency checks are used in the event of a tie, where points are tabulated according to how many seconds late or early a rider arrives. In a standard secret check, riders evaluated by how many minutes they are early or late to the checkpoint.
Spectators enjoy watching the speediest events or event involving bog holes or other difficult obstacles like streams or river crossings. A skilled enduro motorbiker is able to predict where the next check may be and therefore has an advantage over other riders.
They are more able to ensure that they arrive at the next check close to their scheduled minute. Riders use a “Roll Chart” to guide them along the course; it contains all known checkpoints and turns. Secret Checkpoints add uncertainty and variability to the course because they unknown to the rider until the chart is unrolled. Some riders use Enduro Computers, which are instruments that attach to the handlebars and that calculate revolutions of the front wheel. The roll chart is also programmed into the computer so that it can tell the rider when to expect unknown checks and keep the rider on their minute.
An enduro motorbike is specialized for the sport because it has the suspension of a motocross bike with features that make it legal to ride on public roads. Motorbikers enter into different classes depending on engine power.
