With fuel costs varying and warmer weather coming on, many people are turning to alternative means of transportation like the motorbike. Older, experienced riders have that favourite cycle parked in the garage right next to the family car, and will often take it to work, weather permitting. A good motorcycle needs to be insured, just like the car, to the fullest extent their pocketbook will allow.

For the younger cyclist, cost is often a factor, but they should weigh the notion that having their bike stolen and not having enough insurance to replace it against saving a few pennies on premium may not be worth the risk. Insurance, after all, is a form of risk coverage. The more money tied up in a thing of importance, such as a motorcycle or motorbike, the greater the need to insure it, especially if money is tight.

No matter if old or young, if you own a motorbike, insurance is not an option. Many countries mandate it. Finding low cost insurance is not hard, finding bike insurance online is one of the best ways to obtain quality insurance. When you consider the impact on your life if your bike is stolen or wrecked, and especially if the bike is a new one, comprehensive coverage is worth every penny you pay. In the case of accidents, you'll want to be covered by liability to the extent you can afford. Otherwise, you might wind up selling everything you own to pay out awards or court costs. Insurance is one area where we sometimes carry a blind spot -- sometimes cheapest is not best.

Insurance companies will charge more for "high risk" rides. They will also rate a bike that is highly customized or that has expensive add-ons. Do you park on the street or in a garage? Do you have anti-theft equipment? These things can earn you insurance discounts. Have you taken a safety class? Again, the companies weigh all that into the cost of the premium on the bike. Insurance coverage too, will vary, depending on what you use the bike for. Some insurers will not insure a bike, for example, if you are using it to provide a delivery service, such as for newspapers. Many bike manufacturers have recommended insurers. It is always a good idea to check with your dealer to get a list of possible bike insurers.

Insurance for your bike insures you against damage, loss and liability. When properly constructed, a good insurance policy can go a long way towards giving you peace of mind, especially if the bike is your primary form of transportation or entertainment. If it's worth having, it's worth insuring properly.
